Airsoft Helmet Guide: Full Cut vs High Cut vs Fast Helmets (2026)

Your helmet choice affects weight, peripheral vision, and NVG compatibility. Compare full-cut, high-cut, and fast helmet designs for your play style.

Full-cut (MICH) Full ear 600-900g No Impression kits, low-cost entry
High-cut (ACH) Partial ear 500-750g With mount General MilSim, balance of protection and hearing

Full-Cut (MICH Style)

The MICH (Modular Integrated Communications Helmet) covers your ears fully. It offers the most BB protection but blocks your hearing and traps heat. These are popular for impression kits and cost less than high-cut options. Not compatible with NVG mounts without modification.

Weight: 600-900g | Best for: Impression kits, budget builds

High-Cut (ACH Style)

The ACH (Advanced Combat Helmet) cuts away the lower ear section, giving you better hearing and airflow while keeping side protection above the ears. Most ACH-style airsoft helmets accept NVG mounts and shroud systems. This is the most popular choice for MilSim players.

Weight: 500-750g | Best for: General airsoft, woodland ops, MilSim

Fast / Bump Helmet

Fast helmets (or bump helmets) have no ear protection at all. They are lightweight, well-ventilated, and designed for NVG mounting and accessory rails. Speedsoft players and night-ops enthusiasts prefer these. The trade-off is less BB protection around the ears and sides.

Weight: 350-550g | Best for: Speedsoft, night ops, camera mounting

What to Look For

  • Padding: Removable impact foam gives a better fit and lets you wash the liner.
  • Chinstrap: A four-point strap (Y-harness) stays put better than a two-point.
  • Shroud: If you plan to mount NVG, a Wilcox-style shroud is the standard.
  • Rails: Side rails let you mount a camera, flashlight, or ear-pro adapters.
  • Ventilation: Look for vent holes or channels — a solid helmet gets hot fast.
  • Our Take

Most airsofters are best served by a high-cut (ACH) helmet with a NVG shroud. It balances weight, protection, hearing, and compatibility. If you play Speedsoft or shoot night games, a bump helmet saves 200g and gives you better airflow. Full-cut helmets are mainly for impressionists who need the specific look.
