Airsoft Radio Setup: How to Build a Team Communication System

Good communication wins games. From radio selection to PTT placement, build a comms setup that keeps your team coordinated in the field.

Baofeng UV-5R 3-5 km 1800mAh 128 Best budget option

Motorola Talkabout T400 1-2 km 800mAh 22 Simple, no license needed

PTT (Push-to-Talk)

Your radio is useless if you cannot reach the PTT button quickly. Mount it where your support hand naturally sits.

  • Shoulder strap mount: Clip PTT to your non-dominant shoulder strap.
  • Cummerbund mount: Velcro PTT to the front of your cummerbund.
  • Chest rig MOLLE: Attach PTT to the top row of your chest rig.
  • Headsets vs Earpieces

Type Hearing Protection Audio Quality Cost
Over-ear headset (Howard Leight, MSA Sordin) Yes (electronic) Excellent $$$
In-ear earpiece (Acoustic tube) No Good $
Helmet-mounted headset Yes (passive) Good $$

    Frequencies and Etiquette

Most airsoft groups use FRS/GMRS frequencies (462-467 MHz in the US) or PMR (446 MHz in Europe). Some use Ham frequencies via Baofeng — check local laws.

  • Agree on a channel before the game. Use the same channel and sub-tone (CTCSS).
  • Keep transmissions short: "Contact, two players, 50m north of building B, moving east."
  • Confirm reception: Use "Copy" or "Roger" to acknowledge.
  • No music or chatter: The radio is for callouts, not entertainment.
  • Integration with Your Kit

    Bone conduction No Moderate $$$
    Gear Piece Radio Integration
Plate carrier Radio pouch on cummerbund, PTT on shoulder strap
Chest rig Radio pouch on front panel, PTT on top row
Battle belt Radio pouch at 8 o'clock (non-dominant back)

    Our Setup Recommendation

For most players, the best starter comms setup is: Baofeng UV-5R, acoustic tube earpiece, shoulder-mounted PTT, and a radio pouch on cummerbund or chest rig. ORTACTICAL's MOLLE radio pouches fit Baofeng and Motorola models securely.
